The Berlin Bulletin

Just realized I did not write while in Berlin. So, here’s a quick recap of my time there…

I just arrived in Cologne today after about 2 full days in Berlin. I saw many of the must see sights, but also missed a few because of the time I did not have. I was lucky to meet a few great people and eat some incredible food that was not just German fare. My first full day consisted of a very long walking tour around to the major sights and a visit to the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Altes Musuem. I have come to realize what is the realistic amount of things I can do in one day. I was way too optimistic before I left.

My second full day in Berlin began at the Gemäldegalerie which is a museum that possesses one of the world’s finest collections of European art from the 13th to 18th century- my favorite period in art history. I could not pass it up. I was spoiled to see works by Van Eyck, Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, Raphael, Tizian, Botticelli, and many more! I highly recommend this Musuem even though it is slightly out of the way from Museum Island. Afterwards, I toured the Berlin Cathedral, and challenged myself to climb up to the top of the dome for the view. I was not disappointed. I rounded out my tour of Berlin with a nice walk in the beautiful late afternoon through Tiergarten.

Overall, I found Berlin an interesting city, but not one I have any strong desire to return to. It’s not a city on my pretty booked “must visit again” list. I was content. I saw many sights and experienced one of the most visited cities in Europe. I do not feel there was anything to see again. I am so happy for my time there. Honestly, the people you meet while traveling make your experience all the better. And I can saw Berlin was a lot of fun because of them.
