The Extraordinary in the Ordinary

It is so good to be in Copenhagen. My trip getting here left a lot to be desired– from a delayed first flight, to dashing through Toronto airport so as not to miss my flight to Copenhagen, to arriving without my checked baggage (should arrive tomorrow). To say I was reassessing my decision to travel, and to travel alone, is an understatement. I was down right doubting it. However, I was blessed to be welcomed by my dear friend, Sophie, waving Danish flags and giving a much needed hug.

I came to relish the fact that I had made it. Finally. Like I said in my first post– I will be in for some surprises. If I can make it through my first day, I know I can all the rest. It’s definitely going to be a trip full of experiences I never imagined.

My first two days in Copenhagen have been filled with sightseeing, food (of course), and tons of exercise. Spent this morning in Nyhavn and took a canal tour of Copenhagen. Biked from there to see Amalienborg (the Queen’s castle), Marmorkirken (Frederik’s Church), and the Den Lille Havfrue (the Little Mermaid). I probably biked close to 20km today. And I’m proud to say I only had one near mishap when I almost rolled into a fellow bicyclist… I will not be testing my skills anytime soon during rush hour.

Traveling is all about the sights and culture, but also about how you spend your down time. I decided it was finally time for me to read The Alchemist. I do not think there could have been a better time than now. I have already delved into it and gotten so much out (even from just the first 30 pages). This is a quote that has definitely helped center me so far on this trip: “It is the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary; only wise men are able to understand them.” I have already realized that the ordinary moments of my travel days have become my extraordinary memories. For as grand of a life event as this is, I know that the smallest moments are just as important as the big ones.

Here’s to continuing to work past my obstacles and live in the beautiful, ordinary moments.

  1. It is only when we are truly present that we are able to appreciate the finer details of the day. Good for you, Claire! XOXO Love, A Corinne
